Rich Garrett joins Community Foundation development team

The Quad Cities Community Foundation continues to grow its impact with the addition of Rich Garrett, senior philanthropic advisor and director of gift planning, who recently joined the development team. Garrett’s deep experience and strong sense of purpose represent a new layer of strength for an already expert team, furthering the Community Foundation’s position as a destination and trusted partner for individuals, families, and advisors seeking to make a lasting difference through philanthropy.

What were you doing before joining the Community Foundation?

Rich: I spent decades in financial services, including time with Merrill Lynch and other firms. About 10 years ago, I had open-heart surgery, which shifted my perspective. I had already been involved with charitable work and board service, but after that experience, I moved more intentionally into planned giving, including work with the Salvation Army. For the past five years, that’s been my focus.

What drew you to this role and to the Community Foundation?

Rich: I was already familiar with the organization through the Planned Giving Council and had worked with members of the team. When I saw the role, it felt like a perfect fit; it checked every box for me. What really stands out is that instead of supporting just one organization, you’re helping an entire region. The breadth of impact here is incredible, and the team accomplishes a tremendous amount.

How have your first weeks been?

Rich: It’s been a bit like drinking from a fire hose—there’s a lot to learn, from systems to processes—but that’s energizing. What stands out most is the quality and commitment of the team here. We are a small, cohesive group of experts who really know their roles. I’m especially looking forward to working with donors and helping guide them.

What do you value most about the Quad Cities, and what are your hopes moving forward?

Rich: This is such a generous community. My goal is to use my experience to help move the region forward and to shape this role in a way that creates as much impact as possible. I keep a rock on my desk that says “grateful,” and that’s exactly how I feel about this opportunity—it’s a chance to contribute, and to keep learning along the way.
